High School Sacraments
A TIME FOR EVERYTHING…
The writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that “there is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.” That piece of wisdom is of great comfort for those of us who sometimes find ourselves out-of-step with conventional time schedules. It reminds us that life is not a problem to be solved, but an experience to be savored, with all of its twists, turns, and set-backs. When it comes to celebrating sacraments for the first time, some of us don’t always find that the prescribed times of just after birth, Second, Third, and Eighth Grades fit into where we are in life…it’s just not the right time, for whatever reason. There is no need to despair or anguish over this…there is a time for everything.
All of us know that life is a complicated process. The Church, in its infinite wisdom, knows that to be fishers of men and women, many nets must be used. Consequently, the Rite of Christian Initiation was designed to be an adaptable and flexible process for the People of God. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Youth (RCIY) is a special, year-long, sacrament preparation program for teens who have not previously participated in “regular” religious education and/or did not receive some or all of the initiation sacraments (Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation) at the “appointed time.”
